For me it's a symbol of being chosen next, having an aptitude to stand out while still blending in. Thoughts on the sheep spirit can go a bunch of different ways. When thinking of the Sheep Man's importance to the protagonist in WSC and DDD, i relate it directly to the Rat and what we learn about him from the rest of the trilogy of the Rat. But the shorter stories in which he appears are set in a different universe, so this would imply that he is not a figment of the protagonist's imagination. In WSC, the Sheep Man is a sort of composite of the protagonist's dead friend (his spirit to be precise) and the evil sheep, which - I assume - carries over to DDD as well. In Sheep Man's Christmas, it is implied that there are several sheep people (Sheep Professor, Sheep Saint), but it is unclear to me how, if in any way, the latter two works connect to the main canon (WSC and DDD). On the other hand, in SL, he retains the guiding role, but his behavior is a lot kinder, less erratic, and is generally portrayed as a lovable, pitiful creature. In Dance, Dance, Dance, and partly in WSC, he seems to be some kind of guiding spirit who attempts to shepherd (funnily enough) the protagonist towards a better life and self-acceptance. Apart from these, I have read quite a lot of Murakami, and have managed to figure out most of the hidden meanings and subtext, apart from the role of the Sheep Man in the Murakami-mythology. So, I have read Wild Sheep Chase, Dance, Dance, Dance, and Strange Library, as well as the unofficial translation of The Sheep Man's Christmas.
